SAN FRANCISCO – After being discovered stealing and selling marijuana from airport travelers’ bags, two United Airlines employees at the San Francisco International Airport were charged. This operation revealed how employees compromised SFO United Airlines baggage check in.
According to a criminal complaint submitted on June 9, 2023, to the U.S. District Court of Northern California, ramp cargo agents Joel Lamont Dunn and Adrian Webb allegedly recruited a number of United Airlines employees to assist them in stealing the cannabis, loading it into 15-20 gallon trash bags, and then putting it in their vehicles. Cameras showed the staff transporting black trash bags from the airport’s secure area. Later that day, the suspects were arrested for a robbery at gunpoint in the SFO employee parking lot close to their cars.
The FBI has submitted a report stating that Dunn, the alleged scheme’s mastermind, approached a coworker in 2020 and offered them $2,000 in cash per shift to participate in the crime. Dunn allegedly offered additional money per shift “if large quantities were taken that day,” with the accomplice possibly earning up to $10,000 per week.
According to court filings, police confronted two of Dunn and Webb’s unnamed accomplices, United Airlines employees, in October 2022 while hauling vacuum-sealed bags of weed weighing 30 pounds. The duo was charged with conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance for their role in a scheme that prosecutors said dates back to at least 2020. They are now free on bail of $75,000 and $50,000, respectively, awaiting a trial date.
